Group chats are where phones go to buzz nonstop. The fix isn't leaving the group — it's muting it so the noise stops while the messages stay. WhatsApp makes this easy, and there's a setting that's even better than a plain mute.
Mute one group
- Open the group chat.
- Tap the group name at the top.
- Choose Mute → pick 8 hours, 1 week, or Always.
- Confirm. The chat stops making sound and vibration, but messages keep arriving.
Mute except mentions
This is the setting most people miss. In the same mute screen, turn on "Mute notifications except when mentioned" (on some versions, "Notify me when mentioned"). Now the group is silent — until someone tags you with @yourname. You stop the spam but never miss a question directed at you.
Mute several groups
WhatsApp has no single "mute all groups" switch, but you can move fast:
- In the chat list, long-press a group → Mute → choose a duration. Repeat per group.
- Or open each group → group name → Custom notifications to fine-tune sound and popup per chat.
- For a phone full of groups, set mute-except-mentions on each — it's the least annoying long-term setup.
Mute vs hide
Muting only controls the alert; group previews can still show on your lock screen. If a particular group is sensitive, also hide its previews: open the chat → group name → Media visibility / privacy settings, and use the lock-screen privacy guide to keep content off the always-on display.
